Honey it’s the Circle of Life

Oil on Canvas 1200 x 600

Nestled in a sleepy hollow, a Bonnie Doon landscape wakes to a glistening morning and the circle of life continues. Honeybees are already busy working….pollinating the landscape whilst also collecting honey to survive and for others to enjoy. The Bees also provide food for the occasional Magpie…..and so the circle of life continues.

But…. in maintaining this fine balance between life and death are we (humanity) also playing our part in maintaining the global order of things?

Bonnie Bushfire

Oil on Canvas 1000 x 1000

(Second in a three part series exploring the extremes in weather from climate change using Lake Eildon as a constant backdrop).

For far too long we have measured our “success” through civilisation’s simple ability to consume resources for financial gain.... never properly accounting for the harm we cause.

One such harm is Climate Change in which humanity is facing more and more frequently…. extremes in weather events. For far too long we have buried our collective heads in the sand….but as we are confronted in our own backyards the damage caused from extremes in wind, thunderstorms and bushfires will we start to take action?

There is something extraordinarily flamboyant and alluring about the passion fruit flower. The fruit itself is amazing to the taste but maybe, because of my missionary heritage, I am drawn to the fact that according to “Wikipedia” around 1700, the name was given by missionaries in Brazil as an educational aid while trying to convert the indigenous inhabitants to Christianity; its name was flor das cinco chagas or "flower of the five wounds" to illustrate the crucifixion of Christ and his resurrection.

Sounds interesting….. but really… I just wanted to paint them against a beautiful landscape!

Kallista Challenge

Oil on Canvas 1000 x 1000

(Part of a series exploring humanity’s tension with pristine environments).

For far too long we have measured our “success” through civilisation’s simple ability to consume resources for financial gain.... never properly accounting for the harm we cause.

Hence why are we surprised when we encounter the remains of our excesses (rusting cars as a metaphor for our waste) deposited in the places we value so much (pristine Australian landscape).

Does it have to get to this before we take action?

Byron Bay lighthouse and Banksia trees

Byron Hope

Oil on Canvas 1000 x 1000

In our struggle to comprehend the challenge of climate change We are constantly bombarded with how dire our circumstance is….We could be forgiven for feeling like it is all too much.  And yet… there is also so much hope and positive energy being harnessed to turn the tide of climate change.   On a recent trip to Byron Bay, NSW I came across this glimpse of the lighthouse thru this clump of Banksia.  I couldn’t help but be inspired by this idea of Hope.

boys jumping out of fig tree.

Shake Down

Oil on Canvas 760 x 1020

Scientific commentary suggests that in much of the western world we consume 4-5 times more than what our planet has the capacity to sustain us.

Our world is already telling us that we need to be far more considerate and clever in how we live...

Otherwise..... like this visual metaphor suggests....humanity may be shaken, whether we like it or not, into a more humbler existence.

Dingo and Foxes at Flinders Street Station during Covid era.

Dingo & Foxes

Oil on Canvas 500 x 600

Final painting in a series of three…..Dingo and Foxes invading Flinders St Station, Melbourne? Is this really possible?

Apparently so…. yet another example of the impact Covid has had on our urban spaces. Time for nature to remind us of our fleeting and fragile existence.

Are we learning anything?

Melbourne shrine of Remembrance with 1940 kids playing marbles.

Via Climate Rd

Oil on Canvas 600 x 600

Street scene of Duck family crossing Collins St, Melbourne

Ducks Ahoy!

Oil on Canvas 500 x 600

A commentary on our Covid times…..How our cities have at times become like ghost towns devoid of the human “buzz”.

Whilst we struggle to make sense of this confusing existence… others take advantage (like the family of ducks) of their new found freedom, confidently moving forward into a brave new world.

Cotton field landscape with birds.

Wings Within The Cotton.

Oil on Canvas 600 x 1200

Don’t you often wonder….No matter how hard we (humanity) try to control nature (symbolised thru a highly industrialised mono culture like cotton)….Nature has a way of reminding us that diversity and the richness of life is so much more powerful and beautiful.

Flowering Pink Hakea tree.

Pin Covid Hakea

Oil on Canvas 500 x 600

The other day I came across a Hakea in full bloom. The blossoms reminded me of the often displayed image of Covid 19…That similarity caused me to reflect on how often, even in the most difficult times, we can find beauty and hope in the most obscure circumstances.

If we allow it…to prosper and grow…nature can often be a source of inspiration and meaning…and yet why do we spend so much time and energy trying to destroy the one thing that gives us life?

Australian Mining scene with Cockatoos and lizards with message in the sand.

A Question Of Balance

Oil on Canvas 600 x 1200

When is Enough…. Enough? Against the backdrop of a beautiful WA Pilbara landscape reptiles and cockatoos survey a mining scene that is devastating their home. Imprinted in the sand below is a simple statement “A Question of Balance”. A challenge to humanities tendency towards exploitation.

Australian Pilbara rock landscape with Aboriginal dreaming elder

Cultural Steward

Oil on Canvas 500 x 600

How often have we come across an amazing natural scene and wondered if something greater than ourselves was the devine inspiration…

Within the glow of a Pilbara gorge, WA an aboriginal elder lies embedded in the rocky landscape… a nod to to our indigenous heritage but also an invitation to be stewards in our own land.

$950

Cop26 Glasgow

Oil on Canvas 600 x 760

At the recent world climate conference in Glasgow managing methane from cows and the need to reduce our meat intake was high on the agenda. Certain major emitters didn’t even turn up (Russia, India and China) while others unsuccessfully attempted to convince the rest of the world how wonderfully responsible they were (Australia).

The cows in the foreground symbolise those countries that are trying to do their best (branded as Europe and the UK). The US sits in the middle sticking it’s head out flapping it’s ears obscuring Russia and China, whilst Australia (young calf) pokes it’s head out, arrogantly trying to say it belongs.

Bonnie Doon

Oil on Canvas 760 x 1000

A scene overlooking Lake Eildon, Victoria created in two contrasting styles. The background shows the play of light over a beautiful landscape in which the drama unfolding in the clouds suggests change is coming. In the foreground bold colours silhouette the trees and farmland, punctuated with caricatures of human existence symbolising our struggle to acknowledge our impact on the health of the environment.

Pelican Landing

Oil on Canvas 600 x 1200

In the Eastern part of Australia we are experiencing extraordinary flooding events that are linked to climate change. Whilst many of us are struggling to cope with all the rain, wildlife is celebrating much needed environmental flows like these Pelican’s landing. They are just amazing birds that fascinate me endlessly. Their size & look seem to defy the laws of physics particularly as they come to land. When one watches them glide across the water, almost touching it, they hang, teasing the water for what seems like an eternity.
